Consciousness
To really understand how this placement is experienced we have to explore the psychology and values of Aquarius, and to do this we need to focus on what motivates (mars) Aquarius into action. In the astrological round Aquarius is the 11th sign of the zodiac, he is a fixed air sign and is presided over by two rulers Saturn and Uranus. Saturn also rules over the 10th sign of the zodiac (Capricorn). Both Saturn and Uranus share a turbulent mythical story together.
Aquarius is symbolised by man pouring a pitcher of water, but many people confuse this image with the feeling element. The stream of water, and waves he creates represent the stream of consciousness, pouring forth a new vision for humanity, and in turn creating new brain waves, and a new perspective. Aquarius has a vision of achieving group consciousness and enlightenment, by bringing humanity together as a whole. Aquarius is envisioning a better future for the brotherhood of man, within a system we can all work with, and is beneficial to all.
Raising Awareness
Aquarius can become focused upon raising awareness. His progressive nature can lead him into the world of politics where he can discuss relevant issues on humanity, and envision ways for mankind to be “aware” of what goes on in the world. The media for example creates raised awareness we learn that we are not a secluded group of individuals, but are all part of a wider world. The World Wide Web is another example of how connecting to one another can help to bring many people together, in the form of blogs, forums, and in topical debates on relevant issues. In a sense man is no longer separate, but can connect with people who share his goal.
Aquarius is the final stage of the Air sign. In Gemini we learned how to talk, and become more mobile in our environment, relate to our siblings, communicate to one another. In Libra we share our individuality in our interaction with other’s, and through our associates, and public. When we reach the final stage of Aquarius we find the link to all humanity, hence the motivation towards a career in politics, science, good works, and social worker. Aquarius needs to be involved in activities that improve the world we live in, and lifts us above and beyond our limitations.
Liberation from the past
The Aquarian is looking for a way to liberate us all from the chains of the past. Aquarius can be accused of lacking realism and practicality (Saturn) sometimes he forgets one major factor, the ideal vision meets reality in the form of humans beings, who are essentially flawed. However, Aquarius does hold the key in knowing what will improve our lives, and for this reason we can see why he is the so talented in the areas of science, invention, astrology and maths etc.
Revolutionary Spirit
Aquarius has a revolutionary spirit, and in the name of freedom he can at times be found to be rebelling against our structural society, against authority if he feels it limits our freedom, and denies us our rights as human beings. Aquarius certainly wants to cure the ills of mankind. He will try to achieve a breakthrough in medicine which will cure fatal diseases, allow us to live longer, look younger and generally become a perfect species of man. We have come a long way technologically.\For many years we were kept in the dark. Aquarius as the light bringer, shining the star which leads the way. Aquarians are said to be ahead of their time but Saturn (co-ruler) is very aware of the past. Aquarians hate ignorance and he hates greed or materialism for it’s own sake. Emotional brutality, jealousy and possessiveness, he detests along with people who are ego centred. All the worst traits of the other fixed signs which square & oppose him astrologically (Taurus, Leo and Scorpio).
In Capricorn we built a society with laws, structures and rules to follow. In medical astrology Capricorn rules the bones which holds the rest of us together, it is the firm structure underneath., All parts of the body have an important function but the bones hold us firmly in place. Aquarius observes the laws we follow and determines whether or not they serve humanity as a whole, are they in the best interest of the group. If new laws are brought in with the intent of updating old laws, Aquarius will need to maintain these new laws, and there has to be structure to protect us. Aquarius can’t be emotionally involved because if he has too much sympathy he will lose sight of his vision, lose his cool head! This often makes him appear cold or insensitive.
Picking up the Rubble
After his rebellion (Uranus) is over he will always return to the laws and structures that bind society together. Aquarius above all needs to know the truth, but not everyone agrees on what the “truth” or the higher order is, and so Aquarius can ruffle a few feathers while creating his waves of enlightenment. Mercury the lower octave of Uranus and rules facts, and communication on a daily level. Aquarius sees the larger context of our words, actions, and thoughts.
The Aquarian strives for the material world (Saturn) to live up to its ideal. This split in the Aquarians nature is aptly described by the mythology of Saturn and Uranus. The great battle that between them that split heaven from earth. The Aquarian is often pulled in both directions – he is conforming and maintaining society, and he is also reaching for the ideal. You can see his dilemma in trying to integrate these two planets, and the constant mental reorganisation of tearing down old structures to pave the way for new ones.
Vocabulary
To best understand Aquarius it is helpful to think about the vocabulary he uses, often words like should, ideally, what we ought to do etc. You can see how many people can become angry at his overly idealistic stance without considering the individual. It’s always how society and people as a whole should behave, or ought to be. Often many Aquarian’s can literally be cut off from a group, friends, or corporation. It is the re-enactment of the myth between Saturn and Uranus. Aquarius is a loyal member of the group and he has such a profound and deep connection to be with people who share his ideal. However, this severance often releases him, and frees him in a sense to explore new opportunities: ones that he may not have pursued because of his strong alliance to the group.
